I Heart Weight-Loss Surgery

heart6Obesity is a risk factor for many related diseases and conditions, including cardiovascular disease and structural changes to the heart, such as excess heart muscle mass in the left ventricle and enlargement of the right ventricular cavity. These changes, called adverse “cardiac remodeling,” could cause an abnormal heart rhythm, atrial fibrillation and, ultimately, heart failure. However, a recent study suggests that gastric bypass surgery may help severely obese patients’ hearts return to a healthier state and shape.

FDA Advisory Committee Recommends Use of LAP-BAND System

FDADr. Timothy Ehrlich, an experienced bariatric surgeon in Connecticut, was a contributing investigator in a study of 149 moderately obese patients that examined the safety and efficacy of the LAP-BAND® System. He performed one-fifth of all procedures conducted in the trial with good results.
