The Expanded LAP-BAND® System Use for BMI of 30 Approved by the FDA

lapbandFebruary 2011 brought good news from the FDA – the expanded use of the LAP-BAND® System for obese adults who have a BMI of 30 or more and at least one obesity-related health problem, and who have failed more conservative weight-loss therapies such as diet, exercise and pharmacotherapy, was approved on February 16, 2011. This means that Connecticut weight loss candidates with the lower BMI may now qualify for weight-loss surgery using the LAP-BAND® System.

I Heart Weight-Loss Surgery

heart6Obesity is a risk factor for many related diseases and conditions, including cardiovascular disease and structural changes to the heart, such as excess heart muscle mass in the left ventricle and enlargement of the right ventricular cavity. These changes, called adverse “cardiac remodeling,” could cause an abnormal heart rhythm, atrial fibrillation and, ultimately, heart failure. However, a recent study suggests that gastric bypass surgery may help severely obese patients’ hearts return to a healthier state and shape.
